Introducing Our New Team Member: Jonas Nikula
Jonas Nikula is the new addition to Monad, bringing international experience and expertise in signal processing and machine learning. Having studied in Korea and Germany, Jonas is particularly interested in technological solutions closely related to physics and biology, as well as cloud and web technologies. In his free time, Jonas enjoys traveling within Finland, photography, and video games.

Thirty-year-old Jonas Nikula joined Monad less than a month ago. Jonas, who has studied in both Korea and Germany, holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science with a major in signal processing and machine learning. His minor studies focused on embedded systems.
Jonas was drawn to Korea in 2018 due to a long-standing interest in Japanese culture since his teenage years. Korea was a natural compromise because it’s significantly easier to get by with English than in Japan. The following year, Jonas continued his studies in Germany, where the emphasis was strongly on mathematics. The German university posed a significant challenge compared to its Finnish counterpart. The workload was massive, and time flew by with homework. However, the tough year was educational.
Interest in Cloud and Web Technologies
Alongside his studies, Jonas has also gained considerable work experience. He worked in a software company during and after his studies before his exchange years. Towards the end of his studies, he moved to Optofidelity, where he developed code for robots that test used phones. Being involved in product development brought responsibilities regarding the types of computers and operating systems used for each robot.
Jonas Nikula is currently interested in both cloud and web technologies. Rust and various language models stand out, as there’s a lot happening around them now. Regarding the application of software, he is particularly fascinated by various scientific solutions, especially those close to physics and biology. Overall, robotics and autonomous systems ignite Jonas’s enthusiasm:
“It would be incredibly interesting to process scientific measurement data as part of a digital solution,” he says.
Additionally, Jonas is interested in psychology and linguistics, and he sees great potential in combining these fields with technological innovations.
The World Traveler Heads for Domestic Travels Next
Having traveled the world, Jonas says his next destination is a rented cabin in Sonkajärvi, Northern Savonia. In recent years, he has discovered many gems while traveling within Finland. The scenic routes cutting through the beautiful landscapes of Saimaa and the rock paintings found in Eastern Finland have been impressive experiences. Surprisingly, the best dining experience was in Jyväskylä, where the dishes at Restaurant Pöllöwaari were unforgettable.

The camera often accompanies him on trips. Jonas, who photographs both nature and built environments, finds that photography is a way to be more present in situations, as it makes him pay attention to his surroundings in a different way.
Besides traveling, games are a way to relax from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Alongside role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and Alien, various computer games ranging from horror and shooters to puzzles interest Jonas. “Return of the Obra Dinn” and “Chants of Sennaar” receive special mentions from him as fascinating and unique games that stand out from the mainstream.
