Climate action and transparent carbon footprint reporting

At Monad, we have committed to climate action. This spring, we joined over 200 other Finnish companies in participating in the Climate Program organized by the Finnish Chamber of Commerce. The companies involved in the program received practical training, tools, and expert assistance for calculating their organization’s carbon footprint, guidance on implementing emission reduction measures, and the opportunity to strive for carbon neutrality. For us, climate action is also an important part of our core mission – we develop sustainably crafted code, and therefore we want to ensure that our work is based on a sound foundation.

We began our climate work by calculating our own emissions using the international Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. With the “Carbon Footprint Calculated” label, we demonstrate that the emissions from our operations (Scope 1) and purchased energy (Scope 2) have been calculated. The label is granted by the Chamber of Commerce and confirms that the calculations have been performed appropriately. Our operations and purchased energy generate emissions of 8140 carbon dioxide equivalents. To put this into perspective, Sitra reports that the average carbon footprint of a Finn in 2023 was 9610 carbon dioxide equivalents. In the fall, we will start Scope 3 calculations and set future emission reduction targets.

Although our direct emissions from operations and purchased energy are low, we recognize that software companies have a significant impact on broader value chains. And while the new sustainability reporting directive does not directly apply to companies of our size, starting the reporting process now helps us meet the expectations and requirements set by our value chains.

Reporting our carbon footprint is also important to us because it supports our values. Transparent reporting strengthens trust, helps us develop more sustainable solutions, increases pride in our work, and builds a community where everyone feels they are doing meaningful work. In this way, we can provide our customers with the best possible service and be proud of our achievements together.
